Default RE: sloppy shifter

In step order:
1. Jack up and prop the car so you can get to the left side of the transmission.
2. Remove the arm from the shifter to the transmission. Do not loosen the adjusting nut at the shifter, just pull the pin at the arm at the transmission end.
3. Lower car.
4. Remove shifter handle. Reqs an allen wrench.
5. Remove 4 screws holding down the shift bezel. Console bezel is similar.
6. Remove 4 screws holding down the shifter to the car and remove shifter. There is a wire for the 'gear' indicator lamp that needs to be disconnected.
7. Remove 4 screws holding down cover plate.
8. Remove rubber plug on RH side.
9. Remove lock nut and slide shaft out LH side.
10. Remove bits and pieces of plastic bushings.
11. Clean everything - well.
12. Lightly apply some white lithium grease to the shaft and bushings.
13. Reassemble - it is possible to overtighten the lock nut so check the shifter's movement often as you tighten the nut - in the reverse order from step 9.
Jim
Note: On the arm to the transmission, there is awavy spring washer and a flat washer that go on in that order then the pin.
