Default More questions: Shifter positions

1965 Coupe / 289 and a C-4

Explanation of the shifter positions in needed.

There are the normal P, R, N and than instead of where you would expect to see a D there lives a small white dot . Below it there is a small Green dot with a wite circle and at the bottom of the scale there is an L for Low gear .

My question is:
Is the green dot there to mark a sort of an Over Drive position? Also when I shift between the Two (D) dots I feel nothing the car runs the same.

Thanx

TC

That's the infamous Ford two method of shifting used in 64 to 66 Mustangs and other early C4's. In the forward 'drive' position, your car shifted thru all three gears automatically. The other one, only 2nd and 3rd were used, the theory being that on a slipery surface, rain, ice and that other white stuff we hardly ever see herein Silicon Valley, the tires would not spin. There is a way to 'lock' the transmission in a certain gear when starting as in a (ahem, cough) drag race, or the official towing procedure, but I got to go read it from the owners manual. Thankfully it got fixed in 67.

OK that made sense, so which one is the 2nd-3rd gear ? the Green dot or the single white dot?

Big green dot is the full three gears, shifter handle pulled all the way back to before 'L'. The little green dot is the two speed version, shifter forward next to 'N'. There is a way to convert the pattern to the 67 one, first gear all the way back, second gear in the middle and third gear to the forward most position, but I've never bothered. A friend's 65 hardtop has the 67 pattern and she likes it better than the original 65. I'm just used tomine.

I found this very strange. When I first got my Mustang and did not know very much, I thought it was jsut a 2 speed tranny xD. Then I moved the shift lever down one and vuala! A first gear!

When I had my 65 coupe in high school, I would tend to drag race a bit on the streets (sheepish grin). I used the 'L' position as a low or 1st gear. When I hit my shift point, I pushed ti up one spot to the big dot for 2nd gear and finally push to the small dot for 3rd. The small dot is actually the "D" (or drive) position for normal driving. The other 2 dots are for a 1st and 2nd gear.
