Default Air Pump/AC Help!

Hey all, I have a '67 Coupe 289 . I wanted to know if I could remove the air pump and still have the factory AC still work? The A/C doesn't work right now, but I plan on having it repaired (if possible). Or should I take off the belt that goes to both the air pump and AC and enjoy the extra HP? Thanks in advance.

There's another post on this same subject and if memory serves me, you need an idler pulley located on the right hand side of the engine to have the A/C drivebelt clear the fan pulley without the smog pump.

Will it hurt the AC pump to not have a belt on it or will it seize up. Also, will it make a noticable HP difference?

BTW, thx Jim

It won't hurt the pump, you just won't have air conditioning. The bad news is - what ever refrigerant is in your A/C system may (read will) eventually leak out. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation - smog pump or A/C.
As to engine power, all belt driven accessories, power steering, air conditioning and smog, use energy, aka horsepower, so the simple answer is yes.
