Default BRAKE LIGHT

so my car was starting to get low on brake fluid and i didnt know about it. so one day i was driving home from work and my brakes almost went out on me i had to press on them really hard and i heard a loud click then my brake light went on (it only comes on when you turn the key then shuts off) but now its on constantly so how do i get it to shut off again? do i have to have someone at the ford dealership do it for me or what? btw its a 67 coupe.

Asuming you added fluid, and the brakes seem to be working properly. I would check the brake switch. It's right above the brake pedal. Make sure it is working by having somebody stand behind the car while you manually push it in and out.

Hi,
I am kind of new to the mustang world but have worked on quite a few corvettes over the years. In the older braking systems there is a simple safety system usually in the proportioning valve. If you lose fluid in either the front or rear circuit the safety switch gets triggered. In my experience it usually turns out to be a leaking wheel cylinder.Once you repair the problem you can usually bleed the system and reset the light. Also a bad master cylinder can trigger some systems. Good Luck

PS I looked up the procedure in my manual and it says that the pressure differential valve will reset itself after a few firm pumps of the pedal( assuming the problem was repaired.)

I beliieve that it is built into the hydraulic system. It usually stays centered and "off":however, if the pressure gets low in either the front or rear circuit then it moves toward the low side and sets off the light. Once you fix the cause of the problem and bleed the brakes then a few hard pumps should center it. I will type out the instructions from my manual:
To centralize the valve, first turn the ignition to the on or acc. position.Depress the brake pedal several times and the piston should center itself and cause the warning light to go out.. Turn ignition switch off.
if difficulty is experienced in getting the valve to center, slacken the bleed valve on the brake opposite the one repaired and press the brake pedal slowly until the light goes out. Tighten bleeder screw.
I would pull all of the wheels off and inpect the wheel cylinders for leaks. Almost every time I have had this happen it was a wheel cylinder/caliper or master cylinder issue. If you repaired the brake system the you might still have air in the line. Good Luck.

There is no switch to shut the light off. Make sure you havent any leaks at the wheels, add proper brake fluid, have a freind gently push the brake pedal down while you bleed each wheel. THis happened on my '68, and I had to redo bleeding one side, then the light went off.
