Cam choice
I have a late model 302 with 600 holley headers and electronic, other than that stock.I know heads are the best power upgrade but im not ready to drop that much yet.I was looking at the summit cam and lifter setup cuz a friend has it in his truck. My question is what kinda lift duration should i look for with everything else being stock.I still want driveability and its all in town driving minus the seldom freeway trip so i more so want low end torque.Any advice?
Unless you have it apart already leave it stock until you have the money to do it right. This doesn't necessarily mean the new "high Po" heads but springs, keepers, seals & guides; rockers, carburation,etc.. have to be considered whenever a cam change is considered. You also have to keep in mind the stall speed of your tranny and what speed do you want to operate your engine. You will break something,( including your wallet) if you go too extreme.
a fairly decent rule of thumb is to keep the lift under .500 and duration at .50 under .220 and you shouldnt have to change valve springs, stall converter, etc.....but that is just a general rule, not rock solid. Besides, the condition of components such as valve springs, pistons, and the motor in general is a huge variable. jlg2002 is right, do it all at once is the best way, you'd be bound to have issues otherwise. At least that's what I was advised and ended up doing.
