Default Oil Leak

Hey guys, in my quest to get my car running as i'd like it too, the more i look it appears i need a new carb...amoungst my other posts concerning problems such as bogging down and stalling due to running to rich and carb not working properly, i find tonight that:

While looking under the hood and trying to find a part number on my carb to see exactly what i have ( it appears everythings been replaced/rebuilt under my hood except my carb) i can see signs of an oil leak above my block right at the base of the carb. It is not a big leak, but just a small little puddle of oil about the size of a quarter on top of my engine where the carb sits, that has settled in one of the pockets of the engine itself...anyone experienced this?? All my problems keep pointing to a holley street avenger 570, and if i only had the money i'd order one today..maybe in a month or so i'll have the funds

Take a look at this photo and note the oil on the intake manifold just below the carb on the driver's side. That's not oil, but it's gas that has leaked out, puddled, then cooked.

By the way that is now a stain that will not come out of the powdercoating.

When I got my 65 it had the 2 bbl and it was leaking as well and the PO wrapped a rag around the base to collect the fuel. Not what I would call a bright individual. I rebuilt the carb to get the car running and fixed the problem.

okay cool, that puts me at ease a little ....thanks James, you always have the answers! Ohh btw, I have been considering that 570 street avenger we talked about for my 289...do you think thats my best bet? even for later upgrading (302,351, etc)...I've noticed that a simpler 600 holley 4 barrel, is about 80-100 dollars cheaper than the new street avenger series...what would you suggest? I don't want something that's "overkill" for my engine.

Yep, Jimbo is right. Usually with the Motorcraft carbs it will be at the backside of the carb on the intake. The gaskets are leaking. Time for a rebuild bub.

my whole engine looks new and clean and my carb looks like is has been sitting in the yard since '67....def time for a new one the question is, what can i get for a good deal! i'm lookin mostly at edelbrock and holley's (sorry soaring ;-) but i'm not sure what will fit my needs best....will a 600 be overkill? or okay, cuz i can get one alot cheaper than a 570 street avenger, and i was considering replacing the intake manifold as well, but that may come later.

Take your time and do your homework Patrick. The Avengers are a relatively new series (last 3-4 years?) and I'm sure you can search and find any performance/maintenance issues.

The tried and true vacuum secondaries Holley 600 (1850 Model) is cheaper, and there's a bazillion of them out there. You'll probably find that is the common replacement for aging Autolite 4100s.

I personally feel the 600 is too big for a stock 289. It's a good question tho to put to the Section.

If it's too big, what would you suggest as a good replacement for a stock 289?
