not the same motor
Hey everybody,
Been awhile since I posted. I was wanting to know where on the block to look for a vin number so I can buy the right parts. I want to put a 4 barrel on my 1966 mustang, which has a 302 instead of a 289 which I think is out of a 1972 fairlane... Currently it has a 2-barrel. I am going to be doing some coolant work too and wonder if putting a bigger raidatior might be a good idea, since it has a stock one from 1966, or maybe if I should just get it cleaned.
Thanks for any help or advice....ugh I hate it when I get the mustang bug...where to stop...where to begin.

Sorry to break the news to you but there is no VIN number on a 'generic' 302. The best you can expect is a casting number and a date code which are both located in the general area just above where the starter bolts up to the transmission. Generic 302 blocks used on Fairlanes could have a casting number that may look like this: C8TE-6015B or D1OE-6015-AA. The date code starts with a single number for the year, 0=70, 1=71 etc, and a letter, A thru M for the month and a number (or two) for the date.
In any case, for that old style block, almost any thing advertised for a 289/302 will work.

I don't know what I was thinking. Ford stopped making Fairlanes in 1968. That size car was called the Torino from 1969 to 1976. All that I posted before still applies. What's in a name?

What are your specific cooling issues. The fix can depend on the problem. It would be good to find out the year of the engine as there are significant performance differences in the 302, especially the heads, depending on the year.
Since the 4V swap requires a new intake manifold, here is a good page on doing the install. http://www.mustangsteve.com/intake.html
You can fit in a larger radiator, per

Thanks for the repleys, I really appruicate that. The car overheats at parades and in heavy traffic (I am putting a fan shroud in this weekend) andI am getting the rad. cleaned and going to put new hoses and thermostat to into the car (160F). The motor might be out of a 1972 fairmont or galaxy??? Anyhow, good to know you guys are out their, I am sure I will be calling on you for advice soon....
BTW...no 4-barrell this year, hope to next...just drunk dreaming....
