Machine shop Help
I dropped my 302 block off this morning at Kim Barr racing for full cleaning, painting, boring, decking, cam bearings, etc plus clearancing for a 347 and the rough estimate is $600. He asked only the questions he needed to know about prepping the block but works with a lot of people that tend to do things themselves.
i can see that the guy may have shut you down once your conversation turned into your wish list for the motor. we got alot of people that wanted to chew on our ears about their plans and what they "wanted" to buy. usually a great big waste of our time honestly.
but yeah, the crank will need to be reground - polishing a crank with any decent amount of miles will put you in the low end of the clearance range which is bad.
the rods will need to be reconditioned. you dont just check them - you get them done WITH NEW ARP BOLTS DAMN IT!!!!!!!
the block, it will need boring. he can throw a bore gauge on it and tell you if he thinks it will clean at .030 or .040 within minutes. then you can get your pistons and rings ordered so he can properly bore and hone the block. have the shop resurface the block as well - heads arent the only things that warp you know (and its a small compression bump). they can check it for line honing, but if the old crank spun freely 99% of the time it will not need line honing which is a good thing IMO.
are you assembling yourself? if so, before the block leaves have them knock in the cam bearings and install any freeze plugs (although you could do the freeze plugs they arent hard)
