Default T-56 for 65 Fastback

Ok,

I am at the point where i need to handle the transmission for my project and while i know that a T5 would be perfect for anything i would want to use it for... I would never forgive myself if i did not go ahead and put the T-56 in place to get all six.

So, with that in mind, is there anything in particular (other than the body modifications to make it fit) that i have to be concerned about. Keep in mind, I have an IRSfor the rear and coil oversfor the front. I am keeping the original 289 but with a mild build on it. I am building this to do more than straight lines so the6 speed would be a nice touch.

Iam not sure on how i am going to handle the electronics of the transmission. Is this a concern at all? Does anyone have pics or anything to share on this??? Any help would be appreciated.

Sbeaty

You'll have to cut the transmission tunnel out to fit the T-56 and make a new one with sheet metal, and you'll need a new driveline as well. And honestly, if all you have is a mild 289, a T-56 would be a fair bit more tranny than you need. You should consider looking at the Tremec TKO500/600 series as well. They're just as sturdy or sturdier than the T-56 and are more than capable for what you need, have several different gear options for 1st and 5th, costs about $1,000 LESS and fits in your car without having to chop it up. If you do go with a T-56 and it requires an electric speedo, you'll have to get an electric speedo. And as far as more than straight lines, again, the TKO series would do you just as well, the extra gear in the T-56 is just a second overdrive, and many people feel the 5 speeds have a better gear spread than the 6 speed Tremec so the 6 speed won't really give you any advantage on a windy track unless you gear the crap out of your car and keep the rpm near peak hp all the time

Thanks for the feedback, but the T56 is going in. I appreciate the concern, but if nothing else, for detail and that finishing touch. I also appreciate the concern over my checkbook, but let me worry about that.

If anyone else has any suggestions for the T56, i will welcome all of them. If you are going to tell me why i should use something else, please save your hands...

I have the original 289 for it and i am planning to just keep that. Otherwise, the interior and exterior i have not decided. I have a mild plan for it, and i have a wild plan for it... I have not made a decision. Thanks for the tip though. I will research that thread!!!

good for you if you can afford and have the skills to do it\

the guy you want is latamud - https://mustangforums.com/showprofile.asp?memid=61993
he's just done it and can steer you in the right direction thats for sure. he may be on the road at the moment. He was going flat strap to finish it for the hot rod power tour.

good luck

Aussie / Andrew, thanks for the tips. Thatperson actually livesabout 15 miles away fromme. Would like to catch at a local show to check out the setup. Funny how that works out.

As far as the overall,my plan on the car is: "If it is broke or rusted out, it is improved, otherwise, it remains original". I love the classics and God love those people who restore them for all of us to look at... But that is not me. I like to drive my cars... and anything that can be done to improve that drive i want to do. Luckily, my wife is here and she keeps me grounded. Otherwise, who knowshow the car would end up or if it would be completed at all. I dont want it to be one of those neverending projects...

I am going with the IRS in the rear. I am using the Cobra setup, and fabricate whatever else i need. I am replacing the rear frame rails and just hate to strap a couple of big old springs underneath her again.

I cannot help but think that a redesign of the front end would dramatically improve the overall handling of this car,but reinventing the wheel costs $$$ and time. I do have a limited budget andmypersonality does not lend well to patience.I am using the TCP coilover setup. I like the design. I stays true to the original...

So thats it... We will see where it ends up. The biggest issue right now is the body and that is a work in progress. I put a couple of pics for your viewing pleasure...
