Default front suspansion

hi lads i need some more help due to my complete lack of mechanical abality. on the pssanger side wheelthere is a knocking when u drive it and hit a bump. i had a look at it and the the wheel was rocking from side to side as if it was loose. i ooff the wheel and i took off wat looked like an angular bearing, how do u kno when this is worn and need replacement. wat u found is if i tighten the castle nut the movement in the wheel is gone and i the wheel become a lil stiffer to rotare, i put back on the wheel and drove ot again to find the seem noise again with the same problem. the split pin locks the castle nut so why is the wheel knocking again. is it the bearing. i have considered using a locking nut to stop the catle nut from moving.
Q1 how do u kno when the bearing needs replacement?
Q2 how tight do u fasten the castle nut?
Q3 do u think the lock nut would do any good?

thanks lads.

It's difficult to understand what you are asking, but I know that English isnot your forte even though it should be because you are from Ireland. It sounds like you need to replace the hub and the bearing. The race is probably worn and the bearing is obviously toast. So, if I were you I would order the hubs and new bearings. You tighten the large nut until the tire won't turn, then back off until just a whisper of drag is evident. Be sure you have adequately greased the new bearings. Put the locking hub on and insert the cotter pin and bend one tab over. Tap the dust cap back on then replace the wheel.

You don't want to play around with the front end of these old cars. If you are hearing a heavy knocking when you hit a bump it could be several things. Worn wheel bearings, worn-out ball joint, worn out tie-rods, any number of things. If any of them fail it can be catastrophic at speed.

If your mechanical ability is as lacking as you say, get it in front of a qualified mechanic ASAP!!!

Seriously dude, don't half-*** this. It could turn out to be more expensive, both monetarily and physically than it is worth.

Old Chinese saying - 'Picture worth thousand words'.
If you have any questions, use a common base, the diagram, and we'll help you out. The bottom line is to do both sides.
