Default 302 to 390

I have a 67 Fastback that I am getting ready to redo. Not a show car just a nice driver. I want to go to a 390. I have a good one just sitting aound. How big a deal is it? It's a 4 speed car and I am going to stay with the 4 speed.

motor mounts the mount brackets some wiring some plumbing headers to fit your car. onlything id really thing about changing is the front springs. the big block cars used a heavier spring to help with the extra weight.the fe bolts in was a factory engine in the car even the 429-460 fits too.

clutch, clutch equalizer bar, radiator, motor mounts, springs, exhaust, bellhousing, fuel lines, wiring should be the same, other than that nothing much that I can think of.

Just a couple more things. If you plan to use factory exhaust manifolds, you'll need to have "GT" fourteen exhaust bolt hole heads and the correct "GT" exhaust manifolds. The manifolds are expensive, they usually go for $300+ on ebay. Standard heads will only work with headers. Most standard heads can be drilled for the GT manifolds. You'll need to get a big block front sway bar also as it's bent a little different to make room for the oil filter. A word about motor mounts. They are a two piece set up. An adapter plate bolts to the block and the rubber isolator bolts to the adapter. The adapters and isolators run about $200. Small block frame mounts can be used for big blocks by re-drilling one of the bolt holes. The radiator, fan and shroud are big block specific also. I converted my 69 from an I6 to a 390/C6/9". It's not difficult but it is pricy to do correctly.

Will the small block clutch "Z" bar work for the FE motor?

Thanks for the heads up on the motor mounts. There is a set on e-bay. Guess I better snach them up.

I have a 390 out of a 61 T-Bird with the stock exhaust manafolds still on them. I wonder if they will clear.

They won't clear, as I mentioned you'll need GT heads and GT manifolds to run a stock exhaust. I seem to recall that 65 and earlier FE's have a different motor mount bolt pattern that is not compatible with the mounts required for a Mustang. You might want to ask the guy's at fordfe.com.

Not 100% positive, but I believe there were different input shafts on a toploader used with a small block and used with a big block. I think it the number of splines on the shaft. Check David Kee's toploader website. He has loads of info and could probably advise you what changes you need to make for the conversion. I would also expect the Z bar to be different.

Good luck.
