I know this will show how inexperienced i am, but it something i need to know. Can somebody work out a list of terms that people use when they talk about their mustangs and explain them for me? i am only 19 years old and have never had to work on a car until i got my 66 V8. Some words that I don't know are flywheel; the 9.33:1 ratio stuff (jus random numbers); and bell housing. there are more i just cant think of them right off the top of my head. I would greatly appreciate it as it will help me better understand the postings on this forum. plus, i wont look like such an idiot when people start talkin to me about my car.

those are all part names just google search it youll find pictures and info also howstuffworks.com will show you how a engine tranny or rear end works. anything like 9.5:1 is the compression of the engine youll see something like 3.55 or 4.10 thats the gear ratio in the rear end.

 

Is it mainly the nomenclatures of engine parts, or is the entire car that you need names for? I think we could make some definitions of all the various parts of the car if that is what you are interested in. I can assign various members the taks of creating a list of certain parts of the car and defining them if that will help.

 

Get a Chilton's Mustang repair manual, there are others, and subscribe to Mustang Monthly Magazine. From the magazine, you will find mail order stores that have 'free' catalogs.

Get a good shop manual for your car and in the back it will have the names of parts that you are looking for, find the page and it will generally show you a picture. If you plan to do much work on your car a manual will help alot for dissasembly and reassembly.

That would be awesome. I already have, i think its Hanes repair manual, but its not very informative. It gives step by step instruction, but they are pretty vague, i think. I normally ask my dad, but he is either too technical, or too elementary for me to understand him. Thanks for the fast response guys. This is the best mustang forums site i've seen so far.

Good find Jimbo, but I fear most guys will not take the time to peruse and research that site for the specific nomenclature. I could be wrong. Let me know everyone if you feel this should go into the FAQ.

 

I lovehelping ontechnical issues/scenarios...but it's a waste of time to build a dictionary of terms whenthey already exist.

66MuStAnG4sho - tell you what. YOU make out the list of terms you aren't familiar with and could not find a definition on the internet. We'll be glad to help answer.

But don't ask us to define everything for your convenience..... that takes time away from those who are truely asking for help.

 

i agree james, there is just a vast amount of car data and words to be learned. just research on the internet would be dead useful to you.
