I had a similar problem in my straight six. What helped alot was replacing ignition parts. I still have an idle problem but I don't have to stay on the gas soo long for it to stay running. Try replacing the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, points and condenser. All told should be around 50 dollars.

Gosh, maybe it was just bad gas. Dunno.

Thanks again for the info. I am familiar with everything listed to change except the condenser. Obviously it is not the AC condenser if it is connected to the ignition system. What is that?

Itsinside of the distributor. It prevents the points from arcing when they aren't touching the rotor.
