Default Help question. How do you 'prime' 66 289?

I was told I need to prime the oil pump and need to buy a special tool? What kind of tool?

Do I need to prime anything else?

Thanks

You can either turn the oil pump driveshaft counterclockwise with a 1/4" socket (verify size) on a power drill or you can turn the vehicle over with all the spark plugs out. You want to run the pump until oil comes out of the top of the pushrods.

Like gothand said, just put a 1/4 socket on an electric drill with an extension and stick it in the hole where the distributor goes and pull the trigger.. If you look down in there you can see the pump drive.. Just dont drop your socket in there.. Or just pull the wire off the top of your distributor and turn the engine over with the starter to prime everything up.. ( dont pump the gas or you will flood it)

If you are uneasy of using a socket, you can buy a oil pump shaft for about $4 from a local parts store. I bought one about 3 weeks ago, but have reched that stage yet.

The car, including the engine, are not finished. I just got it yesterday.

Be careful with the drill trigger and don't push it too hard. Oncethe pump primes, it requires more torque to turn, and lots more to pump the larger volume of oil that a high drill speed will try to move. If the chuck slips, little metal chips will fall down the hole (and will have to pass through the engine once just to get to the filter). This is particularly likely if you use a specific oil pump priming tool that has a drill chuck end small enough to fit into a 1/4" drill.

As a precaution, you could grind 3 flats on the end you stick in the chuck so that it won't slip. Maybe even "waste" a socket and that modified extension and tackweld them together so the socket can't fall off.
