need help!! on a starter motor
ok iv just been putting my 67 with a 302 back together... but when i went to turn it over the solenoid ratteled quickly.. there is one large wire from the solenoid to the starter motor, and starter motor did nothing, so i pulled the starter motor out and put it on the bench, got my portable battrey pack and put neg on the fram and pos on the terminal where i had the wire from the solenoid all it did was spark, so i took the cover of the top and spit the contact, and the motor went but the weight that breaks the contact and shoots the gear out didnt do any thing, i got another second hand starter but it was the same, what am i doing wrong? do i have the connections wright?? some one help!! thanks
I just spent ten minutes looking up old info and typing out a very informative response, but when I hit reply I got the darn Error 500 crap. So basically...
Your battery may be weak, or your contact disc may be crap. Or perhaps, the pull/hold winding that engages the starter gear is shot? I was a little confused by the description.
Btw, when I was taught how to manually test a starter, I was told to jam a piece of wood into it to make sure it was still strong.
