New engine/trans time Advise?
I think its time my 289 hits the road. I'm only making 190 hp and thats after a new carb, headers and exhaust, camshaft. The engine is losing compression. As I also stated in a nother post it appears the rear end diff gears have gone to hell. My trans is the original C4 but it works fine.
My car is a 67' and so I know I can put a larger engine in. I'm somewhat new to fords and so I'm looking at 351W's, 302 fuel injected's, and anything thats still a small block. Ideally I'd like around 330 hp. I have a brand new 2 1/2' exhaust on the car.
1.) Whats the best choice of motor to get to produce 330 hp stock. As a crate motor/or local engine shop.
2.) Can a C4 handle that hp? Would it be better to convert to C6? I dont mind 3 speed auto's.
3.) What else would have to be converted for a 67'?

A couple of words of advice:
- A stock C4 is designed to handle about 250hp. Ford used a beefed up C4 in 289 Hi-Po equipped cars including the Shelby GT-350H. Your horspower goal will almost require a transmission upgrade.
- Small block motor mounts including the insulators for a 1967 Mustang are unique to that year only. If you get another small block, 302 or 351, you can reuse those mounts on the replacement engine.
- C6 transmissions are generally for big block, 390 up, engines and will not fit a small block. The exception is a C6 from a 71 (on up) 351C car.

Ok great. Well I plan on ditchin my C4, but there are transmissions I see in summit like "Performance Automatic, C-4 Racing transmission, Super streeter, for street machines up to 450hp......" $1,024.95.
I was thinking of that trans with a 351W. That would work, eh?

problem with C6's is they gobble up more hp. its pretty easy to make a C4 stand up to alot of abuse, and not much harder to make it stand up to a WHOLE lot of abuse.
your looking in teh right direction with a streetfighter or performance automotive - basically you want alto red eagle clutches with kolene steels, a kevlar band, a heavy duty servo, and a decent shift improver kit. the next step up is a heavy duty planetary gear set which is a couple hundred bucks by itself if i remember correctly.
IMO, if your going to ditch the 289 get into a 351w..... cause if your going to build a 302 you might as well stick to the 289 seeing as how its a better motor anyways

+1 on the summit trans. as for crate engines here is the place I work at http://tandlengines.com/ I know its more advertised HP then you are looking for but thats why we also do custom engines also. If you rather go with a local builder go to a local mustang car club and ask for recomdation. Who every you get to build your engine make sure they put it on a dyno to break it in, test and tune it.
you want a tranny that'll work great for the price! look up a tci street fighter c-4trans a CUSTOMER of mine purchased one for 850.00 direct from tci and they race it at the track every weekend in a 68 cougar it'll handle up to 450 hp. best bang for the buck. as for you performance goals if you want 330 flywheel or rear wheel horsepower?? I assume flywheel choose a 302 build. here's what we did to the 68 cougar and got about 275 rwhp which equals close to 315 to 325 flywheel engine is a stock 89 roller cam block with 92 h.o mustang pistons a fms f-cam 512/512 lift edelbrock rpm heads and rpm air gap intake and demon 650 carb and mack headers and a 3000 stall convertor in the tranny with 4:11 gears and the car runs 13.0's to 13.2's at 104 mph depending on the humidity . Anyway my point is with a build like this this car has 200 plus hard passes at the track and the engine is still going strong 2 years latter. it's a good solid build and the car runs great!! hope this helps!!!
