Default T10 or toploader?

Need opnions....Just purchased what was supposed to be a toploader for my 66 coupe...when he brought it I saw it was a T10. The coupe has a 3 speed now but want the four. Should I stay with the t10 or sell it and get the toploader. Can I get a reverse lockout shifter like the factory? Which is stronger and where can I find the ratios. Thanks for your help.

Is your T-10 cast or aluminum? If it is the old long cast ironmodel I would rather have a top loader. Most T-10's have a tall 1st gear. Mine is a 2:84.

Never owned a T10 but I am happy with the toploader I bought from David Kee Toploader Transmissions. As far as ratio, the Toploader came with either a wide ratio or close ratio. Here is a page from his website with the specs.

A T-10 in a 65 had a 2.54 1st gear. Toploader had either a 2.32 or a 2.78. All big input shafts were 2.32. ALL T-10's from that era were worthless. PERIOD. Boat anchors.

A Borg-Warner T-10 is a good transmission. However, it is not as strong as a toploader. It is also susceptible to breaking the 2nd and 3rd gear synchros with a stronger than average engine.
Most if not all of the parts needed for aT-5 conversions shown in www.mustangsplus.com including bell housing adapters.

Hate to disagree but the original T-10 was junk. The later super t-10 WAS a good unit, but in 1965 a t-10 was nothing but a stop-gap design until a better unit could be built.....thing is it was built by Ford with the top-loader and GM with the Muncie.
