Default Oil Leak question..

I have an '65 coupe with an I-6. when i run the car, I get a pretty steady stream of oil comming from the back of the motor, near the flywheel. it doesnt leak when the car isnt running. i had the head redone and new valve pan gasketlate last summer.

I'm pretty sure it's probably the oil pan gasket thats bad, should i replace the main bearings while I'm down there, and also, since the front and rear seals are rubber on the oil pan gasket. do I need to use gasket sealent like i would on a fiber gasket, I've noticed sometimes it actually leaks more if you use sealent with a rubber gasket as opposed to just using the gasket alone. any thoughts.

Bobcat,
Many people discard the rubber gasket and use the silicon sealer instead. I believe it would be easier to pull the engine to replace the main bearing seal. It's going to be a tight squeeze otherwise!!

Yeah, it's the main bearing seal that is leaking. I would also suggest you pull the engine out to replace it.

SOunds like the rear main seal to me. In which case, if you are going to repair, it involves removing the rear cap, so might as well do the bearings.
