Is it hidden? My brother just got a simila setup stolen from his car about a week and a half ago here in SoCal, the OP's place of residence as well. NOTHING is safe here! [:@] The nice thing about the TomTom and Garmin Nuvis, for example, is that they can easily be placed out of sight and even moved from car to car.

The only portable unit I've used was a Magellan, but it was my friend's so I don't know how much it cost or what model # it was. For me, it was kind of pointless because I can memorize a map pretty quickly, but for her it was great because yeah, she could get lost between her place and the grocery store three blocks away and she could just stick the unit in her purse whenever she wasn't in her car. The only other systems I've used have been integrated into the car itself.
