another stupid question by me
alright, I am picking up my car this weekend. I have been planning and planning on the first things I want to do. My first order of business is to replace all the lock cylinders and ignition cylinder since there are no keys for the locks and trunk, figured this would be the easiest, that way I can park my car outside of my filled up garage. I thought my second order of business was going to be paint since the front quarter panes have been replaced and need to be painted, but since I am having trouble finding a paint job that doesn't cost more than what I am paying for the car, I just can't bring myself to blow all the money I have saved up on paint. I want to make some other significant improvements for safety (disk brakes, seat belts add an a/c so I can actually stand to drive in the dog days of a Texas summer). This leads me to my stupid question. I have used the rattle can paint to paint parts on my '06, and the color matches good, the problem was with the clear coat. It came out kind of rough. Since I was putting stripes over this part, I just sanded it down a little so it was smooth. I am really leaning toward the rattle can paint on the quarter panels of the '65 I am getting just to get me buy until I decide I want to blow a wad on a good paint job. What are some products you would recommend for rattle can spray paint and clear coat? My biggest problem is that the car has been repainted a few times, so the color code will not tell me what color the paint needs to be. Are there companies that can match my paint some how? I know there was one company I came across online that I could get their color chart and pick, but what if nothing matches? Just looking for some suggestions before I am forced to go to Maaco and practically waste my money on a crappy paint job. (sorry for the long post).
Yes, I could just get the fenders painted, but I am not thrilled with the color the car is now and would rather not spend a lot of money just getting the fenders painted a color I will eventually want to change. Just looking for a stop gap soloution until I can blow the money on a good paint job.

Blue, your first concerns should be suspension and brakes. Mainly for the safety aspect of it, but this is also an easy (so to say) first project and a good foundation for your stang. Same with the seatbelts. Safety before performance...
Usually I would say do it right the first time, but do what you have to do to get by till you can get a quality job. Alot of people run their cars around in primer for that reason...

im sure a good paint store could match it if you took them a sample, now whether or not you can get that color in a spray can is a different story, you could get a cheap spray gun and do it yourself, you'll definetly gain more usable experience with the spray gun

Blue, what exactly is wrong with the fenders? Just unpainted or mismatched colors..? Pictures?
I personally would just leave it alone till it is time. They dont match now, if you rattlecan them they still wont match, so whats the difference?

If you go to a paint store they should be able to put any color auto paint that you need in a rattle can for you. If you take the car down there they should be able to match it easy enough. If you are looking for a cheap paint job there is also the option of using macco or a place like earl shieb. You can get a cheap paint job but you will be getting what you pay for.
