Default Power steering

I am in the middle of replacing my power steering pump and the two hoses coming off the back of pump to the control valve.I am having trouble putting the hose on the control valve-just cant get it to line up straight-dont want to cross thread the fitiing.
Here is the question-is it ok to drive the car without the hoses hooked up-I dont have the belt on the power steering pump either-or is this bad for the ram and control valve?
Thanks Scott

It's not a good idea, the ram shaft can get bent. Try this - remove that reluctant hose and attach it with the hose flopping free. If you have an interference problem with another hose, remove that. I hope you are using flare nut wrenches.

Go to Sears and get a flare nut wrench. Your knuckles will appreciate that and you won't make round nuts out of hex.

Nah, just call Snap-on and they will deliver the correct flare nut wrench right to your shop. But, you first have to give up your first born to them.

You're not kidding. In '99, I paid $17 for a single security T40 socket for my Jeep.

Snap-On has good tools but expensive (duh). There are some tools in their line that are not available anywhere else - yet (Harbor Freight), so mine are mostly Craftsman (grandfather worked for Sears).
