as long as the hose is rated to handle gas and doesnt touch anything it shouldnt your fine for a few years.

<sniff, sniff> Hey! You guys smell that?!!

Go with the steel ASAP. Back in the day I did the rubber hose thing on a portion of my old Fairlanes' fuel line and sure as shooting it developed a leak/cut in very short order. Gas mileage going to hell , strong gas smell and a puddle under the car tipped me off.
