Audio System help
Well, my birthday is finally coming in about 5 days. I was just told by my father that my mother wanted to suprise me with Sirius radio for my 66. Right now it has no working audio system or speakers installed. There are two cutouts right above the trunk that are 6X9 with speaker covers. I have the original radio still installed and just cleaned it up and replaced the **** just for looks. She is just purchasing two speakers to fill those cutouts and the radio, how hard will it be to set this up? I really have no clue at all. I was hoping to hide the actual radio itself to keep the original panel look but if thats not possible I will put it where it works. What all will I need and need to do to make this work? I wasn't even planning on getting a sound system but with a 30 minute drive to school and work she decided it was a must.
Owning two Sirius radios myself, I have a suggestion. By the unit that will fit in the small boombox and get, rechargable batteries ora cig adaptor or an inverter to power it. Not only will you have tunes in your car, you can take it poolside or to the beach or ...
The built-in system works fine in my truck, but I use the heck out of my boombox unit!
You have a verythoughtful mother!

p.s. stay away from channel 198 or your mother may regret her purchase.

Yeah she knows a thing or two about cars, she actually owned a 1967 mustang fastback up until she married my father, it was the year she was born or whatnot and she always talks about it and likes to dig in and help me mess with mine. I've never even read about an audio system being installed and wasn't going to touch it with a stick until I found out about her purchase, will it be hard to install? Something I will have to bring in to get done? She already purchased the in car installation one or I probably would go with the detachable one.

Install isn't so bad if you think it out properly in advance and then re-think it again. For the love of God, DO NOT let they guys at Circuit City, Best Buy, et al, install your system. They will have little to no regard for your car's wiring and you'll end up with a mess. Be certain to use splice connectors, or better yet, bullet connectors like Jim has mentioned for other installs so that you don't have to cut any of your original wiring. Having owned somebody else's creatively wired Mustang, you will regret it!
I don't know what your head unit looks like and where you will put it, but your next largest issue will be the location of the antenna. You can likely get away with mounting it on the rear package tray if you have a coupe.
This is a rated PG forum, you'll have to find out for yourself.

Eh I hate retailers like that, if worst comes to worst I would bring it to billy's auto, he is pretty deep into classics and probably would have a lot more of a clue when it comes to wiring and has helped me out before. I will probably find a way to figure it out hopefully, at least I will finally fill out those horrible cutouts. I'm sure it will most likely come with a guide on what needs to be done hopefully, that or I can sit on the phone with some guy who has no clue what hes talking about and recieve "technical support".
Are you just getting two 6x9's for the rear package tray? If so I would recommend getting some for the kick panels up front so that you're music isn't based mainly out of the back. Unless you have a dash speaker, then you could just connect it to that. As for where to mount the Sirius, I would try the glove box first and if that doesn't work then you might have to get a little creative. Good luck and happy birthday!
I like that under the dash setup, I'm going to try hiding it in the glove if I can, if not then I hopefully will rig up something like that. About the forward speakers, if I have the money I will definitely go for that considering the sound might be a bit off if only in the back [:'(].
it isn't hard to hide it in the glove box. I put my 6-disk changer in there, and you should be able to put your head unit in there too. I went and bought a big block of styrofoam at a hobby shop and I cut it into shapes that would hold the changer in place so it wouldn't slide around. Then I cut some pieces of wood to cover up the styrofoam. It came out very nice. Sorry, I don't have any pictures of it.
