Control Valve Question?
I've replaced my slave cylinder and P/S pump....and now my control valve is leaking. I bought a used one off ebay that appears to be in exellent condition and I also already have a rebuild kit. My problem is that I can't seem to get the dang thing off. What special tools do I need? Any tips? Has any one done this before?
I see from a previous post that you have a 1968 Mustang. The article linked above deals with a 1965/1966 control valve, so it doesn't remove like yours and doesn't describe how to do so. It also has some bad information in it.
Your ball stud sleeve screws onto the end of the centerlink. There is a clamp and bolt (like on the tie rod adjusters) that clamps the sleeve to the centerlink. Remove this bolt and nut, then knock the clamp off the sleeve and down the centerlink a bit. If it hasn't been removed over the years, there will be a steel rollpin sticking up from the centerlink in the slot of the end of the sleeve. This locates the sleeve on the centerlink and help keeps it from turning off should the clamp get loose. Grab the rollpin with a pair of wire cutters and pry up on the rollpin, pulling it out of the centerlink. With the hoses and pitman arm disconnected from the control valve, you can now unscrew the assembly off the end of the centerlink. Count how many turns it takes so you can reinstall the rebuilt valve the same amount.
