Default overheating??

hey everyone my 69 has been running hot recently, to give you guys an idea its normal position on the temp gauge is at 6 o'clock it now stays steady at about 5 o'clock and when i stop it starts to heat up. this has never been an isssue for the past 4 years i have owned my car, when i first bought it, it had a rust cloged 2 row and caused it to overheat so i bought a new 4 row radiator and upped my thermostat to a 180, (prior one was 160) and never again did i have heating problems until now, or so i thought, i brought this up to some of my friends and one who as a 67 stang said it might not be a heating problem but a problem with my gauges, he saidthat in my steering colum i have a voltage regulator or something like that to control my gauges or something to that exstent, he brought this up when i mentioned all my gauges have been acting funny, sometimes they wont come on and sometimes they give me false readings would this have anything to do with my overheating, cuzyesterday it said my car's temp was as hot as itcould geton the temp gauge and nothing was wrong?? my question is could this be my problem or could it be something totally different?? thanks for the help

yeah might be a gauge prob, but need some mroe info. so it heats up when your in traffic and not really moving anywhere? does the temp go down when your on the freeway? or is it just as hot on the freeway? i dont have a 69, but on my 67 the voltage regulator is in the engine bay, to the right of the radiator. it looks like a little rectangle box and has a couple wires to it and one big plug.

ok sry, when i driving my car no matter what time of day or night it runs hotter then it use to, it use to run where the temp gauge pointed straight down like at 6 o'clock now it points at 5 o'clock, thats when im driving, if i stop for a fast food and go thru the drive thru it heats up even hotter almost to the point of overheating, but when it gets that hot it doesnt boil over, out of the radiator. when i first bought this 4 row radiator i never had this problem i could sit in my driveway for 25 mins and the temp gauge wouldnt move it always stay cool. i know the radiator isnt cloged cuz i just took it to a radiator shop and had it cleaned and i just replaced the temp sending unit, aside from this my gauges are acting up, sometimes mytempgauge reads cold or somewhere in the middle as well as allmy other gaugesand i was wondering if maybe these two problems are connected?

The shift in the guage may or may not indicate an actual temperature change in the engine. My advice to you is to simply "keep a close eye" on the situation, paying particular attention to the "smell of antifreze" while driving, whichmight indicate that you may have an actual overheat situation.

The stock guages are best utilized by paying close attention to them at either end of the scale, (either hot or cold),while realizing that these guages are really not considered that accurate or even relative in the middle of their travel.

In other words, I would say don't worry about it unless you actually overheat..... If you can smell antifreze, you will know when you get close to an overheat situation...

Does it spew coolant out on the ground or into the recovery tank if you have one? If not, then you are not boiling. Get yourself a decent gauge.

Aftermarket mechanical temperature gauges aren't too difficult to install and are pretty cheap. It would give you a better idea of what's really going on than the stock unit. If it's something you really don't want in your car, you could just use it until you get the stock gauge working correctly.

i know the radiator isnt cloged cuz i just took it to a radiator shop and had it cleaned
What do you mean "cleaned"???

did they
(a) justflush your system or
(b) did they take top and bottom tanks off the rad and rod out or replacethe core?

If (a), then my bet is your rad is still partially blocked. It's 4 years old and I'm guessing you dont run a filter???

i had the same problem with my 70. use to run at about 1/4 on the gauge then started going to 1/2 and a little above. installed a vdo gauge and it was running hotter than normal, the 3 row was glogged, i could see that, so i bought as new 4 row, everything was fine until it started getting hot outside, 110 and better. i went to a 180 thermostat, tried a 2300cfm spal fan, nothing helped. i talked to a local radiator shop and a shop on line and they both said the 4 row was so thick that by the time the air got to the back row it was doing nothing. told me i should of stuck with a 3 row. im living with it. most shops will tell and sell you anything. what ever you do, don't buy anything from L.A. Mustang, they are the ones that sold me all the cooling stuff that just made everything worse, and no warranty or refund from them.

it was (B), top and bottom off and roded,

i havent smelt anything that would indicate overheatingbut ill keep my noise open, and no it doesnt spew anything out of the raditor, and thats a good idea, i think ill get an aftermarket mechanical temperature gauges,

i was thinking i might just take it to a local rad shop and have them use a temp gun and tell me if my car is actually overheating or my gauge is faulty

if my car isnt actually overheating could my CONSTANT VELOCITYREGULATOR (CVR) be behind this and my other gauges acting up?? one of my dads friends said it could be this, he workedat ford for over 20 years, so i figured it would be worth a second thought. what do you guys think????
