Default instrument bezel replacement

What is the proper way to exchange the instrument bezel in my 64.5 mustang. I know ther are four screws(?) that hold the bezel in. Do I have to disconnect the speedometer cable before I can pull out the bezel? Thanks, Jon

To remove the instrument cluster, disconnect the speedometer cable and the 6 screws to the dash.Get a wiring diagram (NPD 2007 pg190, L-29H,$5.95) to help you reassemble the cluster becauseyou need to disconnect all the wiring. To replace the bezel, a clean - undisturbed workspace and some pictures of the before are required. The metal back has phillips head screws holding it to the bezel. When you remove the screw andpick the back piece up, you will disturbe the shields for the lights so be careful. Reverse to install.

Jon,
Here is a great site that you can doanload any wiring diagrams for the early mustangs. I rewired by cluster last night with a new painless wiring kit. I am sure some will agree with me that the painless kit is awesome to work with.

What great pieces of information! Muchos thanks to both 66GTKFB and 65StangFB! This forum is great.

I need a little advice, too.

I have a 64.5 260 V-8 manual 3-spd (soon to undergo a T5 swap for better HWY driving) with a Generator.

I am thinking of modding the electrical system and interested in hearing other's opinions:

1 -Gen. to Alt. conversion - Like the charging profile of the Powermaster 140 amp one wire (low RPM/idle kicks out ~ 80 amps)
2 -Change 64.5 steering wheel, turn signal and horn to a 65 wiring configuration - fewer parts to go wrong than a 64.5?
3 -Custom Autosound radio that will both charge and take a MP3 player (current AM radio is dead)
4 -Adding a tach and voltmeter into a pillar gauge pod (do not want to alter dash but want to keep tack of alt charging and RPMs after T5 installation)
5- Adding a package tray with 3rd brake light for extra safety (drop in gas tanks not exactly rear collision friendly - source of many lawsuits against Ford)

Since it is a 64.5 with old thin wires, should I replace the whole wiring harness ( have read good comments about the 64-66 Painless system) or just replace sections of wiring to accomodate these new accessories?

Here's some info on the Generator to Alternator Conversion.

Do yourself a favor and don't be tempted by the price of the "cheap" repro bezel. If you get it from NPD, go for the "best quality" repro. I saw both side by side and the difference is startling. For only an additional $18, you'd be crazy not to get the better one.

Good luck!
Jeff
