Default Fan Shroud issues

I have been working on my AC and I bought a fan shroud since mine was missing. Car is 65 289w/AC (3 row radiator).

I bought the stock fan shroud (and requrired brackets). The fan is stock and it measures 17". Previous owner replaced the fan clutch with an aluminum spacer.

When I installed the fan shroud it hits on the drivers side top left corner. The engine mounts are new.

My question is this. Does the stock fan fit inside the shroud or does it sit aft of the fan shroud? It is difficult to explain with words, but my point is should I go get a shorter spacer from the zone so my fan sits aft of the shroud?

Thanks
Dan

I always thought that you wanted to keep at minumum 1/2 of the fan blade within the shroud to make it function properly.

I bought the plastic shroud and I spent alot of time to get it to fit without hitting the fan. You may have to rework the brackets a little depending on how bad it is hitting.

You need about an inch of clearance between the fan blades and the radiator. If you are too close, get a 68 289/302 fan spacer. It's shorter than a 65/66 type.

Yep! Loosen all the bolts and slide it as far as you can in the direction is has to go. Tighten it up and then 'finesse' the shroud where it needs to be. The brackets are thin and easily manipulated.

Good luck!

Let me clarify Jeff's post - get the shroud as close to the radiator as you can, flush if possible. The fan should draw air thru the radiator, not from the space between the radiator and shroud. Fan spacing is another item.

I have the same exact setup. You have to loosen all the bracket nuts a little then use your thumb to massage/bend the corner that is hitting, then tighten up the nuts and see what you have. The blade just barely misses the shroud at the corners, but since the shroud is made of very thin metal, you can make it fit.

+1 on your post. I agree with the idea is to get the air thru the radiator not the fan in the shrould. In my opinion, just off the of therear edge of the shroud is just as efficient as puting it in the hole with 1"clearance.
