Default Strange Noise?????

I have a 64 1/2 Mustang 289 - 4 speed.

When I am cruising in 4th gear there is a strange chirping noise that sounds like it is coming from inside the dash / steering wheel. I can't pinpoint the problem, and the chirping gets louder and faster with the faster that I go. This just started happening last night. Anyone have any ideas of what this could be?

Speedometer and/or the cable. The cable has a tendency to get dry, aka loss of lubricant. The fix - remove the cable from the transmission end, wipe clean the inner cable, lubricate it with white grease (lithium) and return it. The other problem may be the speedometer itself, old age. The fix - replace it.

Hamster wheel squeeking?

Probably not. Check the speedo or it could be something coming loose and vibrating. About once a year my interior panels in the rear of the fastback start chirping from the hardware starting to work loose a little bit, sounds kind of like a bird chirp. Grab your 1/4" socket set and screwdrivers, stand on your head under the dash and start checking.....
