hello all, anyone know much about the AC compressors in 71-73 Stangs? My 73 302 compressor has leaking shaft seals. And im replacing it with a rebuilt compressor from a local store, but it says it comes without the inertia ring. I assume thats the big heavy ring on the pulley. Do I need this? If I do, how does the compressor pulley disassemble from the shaft, the end bolt on mine is like super tight. that is sorta why im wondering about needing the inertia ring, I would think the new compressor if it needed it would come with it. Thanks

 

You'rwe gonna need a puller to get the old pulley/clutch off.

 

I would suggest swapping over to a modern compressor if possible. They won't pull your engine down as much and are better suited for working the R134 you'll be putting back into your system.

That is, unless you plan on showing your car in an all-original class...

 

im with colorardo r12 last time i priced it couple years ago was pushing 100 dollars a 12 oz can with r134a is still dirt cheap.normal ac system uses 4 to 5 12 oz cans.

 

Pffffttt. You can't find R12 anymore. I changed my old York over to 134A a few years ago, and the old compressor only lasted one summer with the new stuff in it. I am in the process of getting a new Sanden compressor. The local air con guys say they will store my 134A and put it back in the new system for $36.50. Sounds reasonable to me, so next month I'll giterdun.

 

soaring you can just need a licenses to buy it pepboys is the only place left here that has it. i dont know why cars dont use propane like some big ac units do.

 

Refridgeration is my field and the compressor should work fine with 134a in it, mine did, til the 34 year old shaft seal went. I had an R12 kit to put in it, but I didnt, its worth more on ebay,talk about completely original. I just didnt know if the compressor needed that inertia ring, as my new compressor didnt come with it, my past experience tells me no, it just takes less load off the engine when running AC by having a heavier spinning mass. And thats a pain pulling those pulleys off.
