Default Pertronix confusion!

I just installed the Pertronix ignitor I on my 68. I hooked the black wire to the neg. and red wire to pos. in about 15 min and it started right up and runs great. Now a buddy tells me that it is not hooked up right since I did not run a wire to the ignition switch. He said it wont last long the way it is wired now. Is this true?

I dont know whether he is right about it not working for long or not, but,,,,,

If you replaced points with the Pertronix unit, and used the same hot wire from the orig ignition, the Petronix unit will not be getting enough voltage. The reason being is that the points setup required that less voltage be supplied to the coil while the engine is running, so Ford used a resistor wire in the ignition circuit.

So, you rill need to replace the "resistor section" of the ignition wire or run a new one in order for everything to work as designed.

Thudersize exactly right - suppose torun full 12 volts to pertonix.Current wiring only supplying 6 volts because of resistor wire. May want to double check voltage with volmeter - just to be sure someone had not bypassed sometine in last 40 years.
