Default Blinker Question

OK the only lights that work on my 69 are the outside headlights. Wheni push the brake pedalthe right turn signal comes on in the dash. The turn signal lights dont even have bulbs in themI thought i remembered hearing that if a light came on the dash when you hit the brak that the flasher was out. But can you tell that with out bulbs even being in there. Or am i completly wrong.

Alex,
With all that electrical malfunction, I suggest you get a wiring diagram. The majority of lights are fused in the fuse panel under the dash. The exception is the headlights that have a circuit breaker in the headlight switch - naturally, the only lights that work.

Do I read rightly that you have no bulbs in the turn signal lights? If this is the case you wont have running light bulbs installed either, but I may be wrong about a 69.

In any case, if I read this right, you need to start by putting in light bulbs...... ??

Almost all60-70'sFords route the brake light voltage through the turn signal switch for distribution to the stop lights/turn signal (blinkers). You are seeing a breakdown in your switch and the voltage is seeking the least resistance to ground thru the indicator light bulb. Put your outside bulbs back in and take another look. If you still see the light in the indicator, replace the TS switch.

My question was meant to mean if it was normal to have the blinker indication on the dash light up when you hit the brakes.

No,the brakelights, turn signals, and emergency flashers goes thru the turn signal switch in the column. There are two flasher inputs, one is for the turn signals (keyed hot)and the other for the emergency flasher (always hot). Sounds like there is a short in column or switch for this to light up when you hit the brakes.

The dash signal is lighting because its the "only" load in the circuit, since the other bulbs (loads) are missing.
