speedometer bounces
i just replaced my speedo cable two days ago, when in stalling it, the manual said to put the cable out carefully and grease it down, but becareful not to over grease. so i put very little and when i took it out fora test drive it bounced up and down constantly, ex ( if i was going thirty mph the speedometer would be bouncing from 30 up around 45 and back down)so i pulled it back out and re-greased it and used lot this time and it helped out alot, now if im going 30 it only bounces from 30 up to 36,37 or so but it still does it,
is there anything else that could also be causing this, or be helping cause this problem? like my gauge? cuz before i installed this one the one prior was disconneted from the dash for over 2 years. anything theroies i'd love to hear them thanks

This isn't too insightful, however they mentioned that they used PLENTY of white grease and WD40.

Ford recomends the use of a light coating of white grease, the Lithium type. If you want to use graphite, the speedometer cable housing and cablemust be removed and completely cleaned as in flushed with solvent. If you don't have it spotless, you will wind up with one of the ugliest looking grease ever. I do not recomend graphite.
There are three main causes of bounce: a bad gear in the transmission, the cable binding in the housing and the speedometer itself. The two former items are available in the aftermarket. Only a used speedometer is available unless you go to one of the expensive ones.

OK, school is back in session. Sit down, shut up, and read.

I did not read the whole article, but I'm assuming Soaring is trying to get the point across that graphite is one of THE best lubricants. It is dry so it won't gum up, and is essentially unaffected by temperature. Correct me if I'm wrong!
Graphite is an excellent lubricant. I've used graphite lubricants in non-automotive applications for years, but not on speedometer cables. Graphite works best in a dry environment - no water, no grease and no oil.
