Default Body Work

I've finally started doing some body work on my car. I took that nasty looking vinyl top off and lo and behold i found a ton of rust. After staring at a brown roof for several minutes i came to the conclusion that i need to chop the roof off and put a replacement on. Found a donor car selling the roof for $200. Will begin doing the replacement this friday. Wish me luck!

Here are some pics:

This is my car with vinyl top (Back in summer--about June '04)

And now my lovely vinyl-less roof!

I'll keep this thread updated as i get more work done and more pics uploaded.

Vinyl top is ugly in my opinion. I'd rather have a hardtop. Plus it was beginning to rust through the top. Lots of holes and cracks...and lots of rust bubbles. The top had to be taken off eventually. I do have the option of putting one back on once im done with my roof...but ima keep it a hardtop.

I am with you, take the vinyl top off. Make it a convertible!

Nah, making it a vert creates all kinds of structural additions. I agree with vinly tops being ugly. But, that was the "thing" back in the 60's. Not just with Mustangs, but with many other cars. Unfortunately, Ford didn't expect them to last this long, so went with the flow to sell more cars back then.

One unfortunate fact is that most car makers would put vinyl top on the cars that had some type of defect on the roof. Some cars were ordered that way and tops were put on good roofs, but not as a rule.

Vinyl tops are purely a personal preference. I had a light green 68 with a white vinyl top and it looked good. I had a black 71 galaxy 500 2 door with black top and it was awesome. It looked crappy with out it.

I had a maroon 67 that looked like crap with a black top, so each to their own. I think Black over Black looks sharp. Plus the fact that vinyl tops are becoming more collectible because there are fewer and fewer of them.

Enjoy, however and whatever you decide.

Unfortuantly that was the case for my Car. My car was originally gold, and when it was repainted black, the roof was bondoed up and then covered witha vinyl top to hide all the rust damage. That's why when i took the top off my roof looked so horrible. It's just because some lazy bum wanted to take a short cut and cover up the rust rather than clean it up... Now i gotta do the dirty work.

I was joking about the convertible, But you could do it and put bracing under it or a roll cage.
