Shade tree mechanic 101:

1. Knocks at 1/2 engine speed=lifter
2. Knocks on acceleration=broken piston
3. Knocks on deceleration=wrist-pin
4. Knocks all the time=big-end rod bearing

i dropped the oil pan and what do i find but a lot of metal shavings..i used the screwdriver method and couldnt really feel a deiff anywhere but i could hear it coming out of the front.I pulled each main cap one at a time and replaced in the same position and theyall appeared fine.i have oil pressure...The metal shavings look like pieces of aluminum but its abone stock late model 302 so i dont kno what could be aluminum..The knock had no rhyme or reason..Start and hear it then go away for awhile then back. When i started this morning is was loud at first then there but not as loud..im confused

Did you fire it back up after inspecting the bearings? I'm curious to hear what it sounded like. Metal in the pan is never a good thing. There'll always be some ( very little if at all ) present just from the age and wear.

Again, going to guess a rod bearing. If a main was spun, you'd have pressure issues and it'd be alot more obvious.

i believe i found the problem..
1. I thought maybe the eccentric cam for fuel pump was rubbing so when i took off lower pulley found the bolts had loosened and i shook it and it made the same sound so Check
2. The shavings were from the eccentric rubbing ill post a pic later its ground off aluminum from the timing chain cover..
So thanks everyone ill let u kno how it does once i change to an electric fuel pump and new gaskets and whatnot and fire her up.

Yeah, I knew it wasn't a rod bearing. Those suckers are very loud and clack all the time. Glad you found it. Get back once you get her repaired.

When my brother-in-law called me years ago about a knock in his 280-Z my first question was...."does it sound like satan himself is inside your engine trying to beat it to death with a 24oz. ball-pean hammer?".....his reply was in the affirmative. When we took the engine down 3 rod bearings and the rear 2 main bearings were gone.
