It could just be an exaust leak. Is it smoking any extra out of the tail pipe?

If its a deep low knock its a rod bearing. If its a tapping noise its a lifter. Check your oil pressure when its happening.

try to locate it,, Left side or right,,, If its central its most likely a bearing,, if its to the top left or right look into a lifter.. The soundcould vibrate through the push rod..

In my experience,,, most knocks are hard to tell exactly where they are coming from... until they get bad...

Get a long screwdriver and put the business end on the block at several spots and the handle end up to your ear. See if you can visualize what is happening by hearing what is making the sound. If it is a rod bearing, it will be clacking 100% of the time.

Well it does seem to be more centrally located.I thought maybe water pump bearings or rod bearing. But it isnt all the time. And even when its knocking it does go and come..So if i drop the oil pan will i kno right away if its a bearing? What all should i look for?

There's still alot of stuff that needs to be addressed.

At cold start, do you hear the knock and then it fade as the motor gets oil pressure?

At operating temperature, does the knock happen under a load (accelerating ) or do you hear it when you're letting off the foot feed?

One thing is for sure - if there's any bearing issues, the damage is done. There's no magical fix and it'll only get worse. (Louder and louder)

Follow Soarings suggestion and then come back to us with what you've found. I'm going to guess it's a rod bearing. Main bearings usually acompany things such as low or no oil pressure, etc. I'm guessing you've checked to be sure the oil pressure guage is working properly, yes?

Cheers.
