Default Coil Spring Removal Tool

The first picture is of Ford's coil spring removal tool from the 1966 Mustang Shop Manual. This removal tool uses the same conceptas a Snap-On Tools type, removal while in the car. Using this style reduces the 'loaded grenade' potential of the hook type. The second and third pictures are my home-made version.

In one of the seminars that the Mustang club I belong toput on a while back in member's garages, thatmember had a 67 hardtop that needed the coil springs removed. He used 'hooks' on one side, I used my home made one on the other. I was done before he had the hooks attached. Needless to say, he had me make 'Version II' for him.

It's a 5/8-18 threaded rod 24 inches long with two lock nuts on the bottom. The top and bottom plates are 3/8 inch thick steel and I used a drag tip on my torch to cut the top plate round. The bottom plate is 2 inches wide and there are four 1/4-20 bolts to keep it aligned. The top plate has a spacer welded to the low side to lift it up a bit and three 1/2 inch holes to align it with the three shock tower carriage bolts. A couple of thick flat washers acting as thrust washers, a coupling nut as the compression device, some grease and a rachet wrench make it work.
Install from the top thru the bottom plate and thread the two lock nuts tight, then go.

Cool tool!!! I am all for defusing the bomb in a safer way than claw type compressors allow. I built a bolt in type comressor

Best thing I ever did when making the tool was to install a bearing on the top, makes using it 10 times easier

That tool looks a lot safer and easier. I remember changing mine with the hook contraption and it was a pain I pretty much gave up and took my chances with the granade effect.

I like it. I had a few used regular bearings laying around but wanted a tapered roller type so I didn't go the bearing route. Mine design has a definite lifespan and the next version may include tapered bearings.
