Default Project 67 RUSTang *new pics

I felt inspired to post some pics of my project. I have before but it's been awhile. It's almost ready to be painted. It is a low budget RESTOmod so if that offends you, look away.
It started in 1981 when I was 15. I bought a wrecked 67 hardtop for $500 and later another for $75. I won't go into a lot of detail on that one but I spent a lot of time and all my money as a teenager to fix it up. About 10 years later a guy with another 67 hartop offered me a deal. He bought mine and I bought his. He didn't want my modified 302 so I swapped his stock 289 into mine. He gave me about 4 grand and I gave him $650 and I kept my motor. I sold the motor and used all the cash to buy my first house. The rusty 67 that replaced my prized 67 has been a long, slow project.
In 1990 I put rear quarters, wheel house and floor pans in it. A few years later I put a stock 460 C6 in it.

Fast forward to 1999 as very little happened as my first wife left and I was a single dad for a few years then remarried and had 2 more boys. In 99 I had a job transfer. After packing up the car and moving it I was inspired to get back after it. The 460 needed work so I yanked to rebuild it and found I needed a new block. In the process of looking I found a perfect 429 police intercepter motor that just needed freshing up. I put a SCJ cam and TRW Forged pistons and Holley 775 street avenger with Performer 460 intake and MSD ignition.

My plans were to make a California Special replica but with a 68 Shelby front end. My favorite car of all time is a 68 GT500KR convertable. Even back then I knew I couldn't afford one. Anyway the movie remake of Gone in 60 seconds came out and I fell in love with the style. I know a lot don't like but I do so I went with it. I had already put in the 67 Cougar tail lights and Shelby deck lid.

I couldn't afford the Eleanor kit so I waited until parts were available seperately. I bought the nose and hood first.

At the same time I started on the suspension and brakes. I put Granada front spindles and a Lincoln Versailles 9" rear. I replaced the upper and lower contol arms and bushings. Tie rod ends needed to be swapped too. I put a Shelby front sway bar and did the 1" drop also. I also replaced the rear springs with 5 leaf HD springs.

Unfortuneately during the suspension work I found that the front frame rails and shock towers were rusted. The whole front from the firewall forward has been replaced.

When the new front frame rails, apron, etc. when on I added the torque box to the passenger side and replaced the drivers side. I also added sub frame connectors.

Once the undercarrage went back together it was time to focus on the body. A lot of work went into fitting the glass.
