Default Steering Wheel installation

I have a 1967 mustang and just bought a new woodgrain steering wheel. I have an old grant style wheel on there currently. The old wheel has a exposed large nut that seems to be holding down the wheel and three other little bolts sticking up. My question is how to remove the steering wheel and install the new one. I suppose that I just remove the large nut in the center and use a steering wheel puller from the local auto parts store? What do the other three bolts do? How do you install the new steering wheel? Any advice would be appreciated. I also currently do not have a horn and would like to install one now. Once the wheel is removed, what type of wiring am I looking for to install the horn?

Thanks,
Larry.

The three 'bolts' may retain the horn sliding rings. Pictures would help. The large nut is the only item holding on a wheel in a normal installation. If your new wheel has no instructions, match it with your old one, that may answer many questions. There may be a mark on the end of the shaft that indicates where the top of the wheel is to be centered. The front wheels need to be straight forward. The horn is actuated by a contact to a pair of insulatedrings attached to the steering wheel and make contact with twosliding posts coming up from the column wiring. To verify the electrical continuity is correct, jumper the two contacts together after you've installed your new horns. Make sure someone has their ear close to the horns - someone you may not have a good friendship with.

Jim, Thanks for the info. I will try to take a picture tonight to show you thethree "bolts". The information about the mark on the end of the shaft that indicates where the top of the wheel is to be centered is very valuable.

the three bolts that screw into a base and attachs the steering wheel to the base, as well as allow the upper horn ring to slide up and down to make contact to the lower ring activating the horn. absolutely disconnect your battery BEFORE doing any work on the steering wheel. Last thing you need is to arc the hot 12V horn wire to ground and burn up some wiring. additionally, pay attention not to lose the shaft spring below the steering wheel, and also don't forget to remove the turnsignal cam from the back of the old steering wheel and put it on the new steering wheel. When pulling the steering wheel, don't cross thread the bolt, these are fine threaded so use the correct bolts on the steering wheel puller.

Do you have to have a steering wheel puller to make the change? Can you do it without having to buy a new tool?

I plan on borrowing the steering wheel puller from the local Advance Autopart store. They will let you borrow various tools like the puller.

Yeah, you just leave a deposit for about what the tool is worth, then get your money back when you return the tool.

O.k. for those of you who are interested, I finally finished installing my new steering wheel. I have also fixed the turn signal cam. This project was relatively easy. When removing the old steering wheel, I did not need a steering wheel puller. After loosing the large nut the steering wheel came right off. I am not sure it was suppose to be this easy, but it was. The local Advance Auto parts store had a new turn signal cam in stock. I had to cut the old wires for the turn signal cam and solder in the new turn signal cam. I have uploaded pictures of the old turn signal cam and the new installed turn signal cam as well as the finished installed steering wheel. The only problem that I have is that I think the steering wheel is a few degrees off of being exactly straight. I guess my wheels where not perfectly straight when I took off the old wheel. The new turn signal cam is also not locking into position when I turn on the right signal. The cancelling cam is working fine but the turn signal cam is not locking. Has anyone and this problem before when installing a new turn signal cam? Is there a trick to getting them to lock?
Larry.

looks nice... i was at the junkyard the other day and was looking around I saw this guy pull one out of a old van (not sure of make/model) and i was only 10 feet away. Had I seen it I would have flipped and gotten it. Turns out the guy bought it for something like 20 bucks too!!! [:@]

I have a follow up question about turn signal cams and such are they all equal, I 'm in the same boat with my turn signals, seems like the cam doesn't work someof the time and not at all at others I'm on my 3rd turnal signal setup
