Default AOD in 1969-question

I am in the process replacing my C4 trans with an AOD. I decided to go this route v/s 5 speed and hope I made the right decision.

What do I do about the shifter? Existing shifter is 3 speed [1, 2 and "d"]. I presume that some of the aftermarket [b & m or hurst] has something to replace existing shifter, but what are the problems with keeping my existing shifter?

Also the shop says that my neutral saftey switch can not work. is there some adaptor that i can buy to make that hook up and work?

Where can i find the gear ratios on the AOD? how can i estimate the rpm's with a 4.11 rear gear at h/w speeds?

thanks for any help!

If you don't have a console, you can probably use a floor shifter from a later (Fox body) mustang that was available with AOD. The aftermarket guy's probably make something also.

AOD is a 3 position shifter transmission so your stock shifter is fine.
The shop is wrong you can purchase a harness for it at windsor-fox.com and splice it in, or make your own, or just not use it (I don't)
AOD gearing is: 2.40 : 1 1.47 : 1 1.00 : 1 0.67 : 1
AODE gearing is: 2.40 : 1 1.47 : 1 1.00 : 1 0.67 : 1
E4OD gearing is: 2.71 : 1 1.53 : 1 1.00 : 1 0.71 : 1
4r70w gearing is: 2.84 : 1 1.55 : 1 1.00 : 1 0.70 : 1

I hope I didn't confuse by posting 4 trans gearing setups. You AOD will have the AOD gearset, but a popular mod when doing a performance build up is to swap gears around. I have the 4r70w gearset in my AOD in my 65 with a 4.11 and created a speed chart based on my tire size and gearing. Thing to remember is that these are theorical numbers and do not account for converter drag, wind drag, etc. Here is a link: http://www.car-videos.com/tools/speedrpm.asp

This one is mine:

Also, depending on your cam, be sure to choose the correct stall speed of your converter...

Your nuetral safety switch is located inside your shifter housing and will work just fine with that trans. You may have to lengthen the manual shift rod on the AOD in order for it to work with your stock shifter.
