Default Help me choose an Exhaust

I have a 68 mustang with a 289. When i bought it the car had dual glasspacks on it. I loved the sound of the glass packs but they were robing me of power so i bought a whole new exhaust from the h pipe back, flowmaster original 40 series. they have alot deeper tone but they sound like a droning more then a rumble. Im selling just the mufflers and what to get new mufflers. What kind of muffler will give me a good rumble. Flowmaster super 40's?

Flowmaster now has super 44's..loudest one to date...you might check them out and see what you think...also, I think magnaflows have a nice rumble..have you checked the FAQ for sound clips?

ive heard good things about magnaflow but they can be a little more expensive...i would stay away from flowmasters though, in my opinion they all sound like crap. Right now i have flowtech raptors and really like the sound, they are pretty loud when you step on it but quiet when youre just cruising. ive also heard good things about Ravin mufflers.

I've heard a couple of ppl's rides that have cherry bombs and flow masters behind them and it sounds really good. I'm not too sure about cherry bombs robbing power because they are basically straight through design.

Glasspacks don't rob power. Flowmaster mufflers, do. It about efficiency. Your 289 is probably pretty stock, so those 2.25" pipes are a bit on the big side to begin with, which is why the more restrictive muffler seemed better.

Get a set of flow-through design mufflers, either turbo or original style glasspacks. Cherry Bomb has both, as does a few other brands (I think it's MagnaFlow, but could be DynoMax...been a while). Unless you're spinning that 289 past 5k RPM, 2" pipes will be more than enough.

When i bought it, the car had a custom straight (literaly) 2 inch pipes to glasspacks. With a terable welding job. Now its the correct exhaust for a 68 mustang with the correct h pipe, intermediate pipes, and tail pipes, but its at 2 1/4 inch. Its got edelbrock performer intake and performer 600 cfm carb. Huge difference in power and performance. Besides that your right its basicly stock, the reason i went with thicker exhaust is for down the line when i get a cam and heads and what not. At this point im more focused on the tone of the muffler than the performance. I just wanted to ditch the glasspacks because of the whole custom, not correct exhaust and i thought it was robbing power more than it was. I found soundclips for flowtech afterburner, terminator, and raptor mufflers. They all sounded awesome. I bought flowtech raptors because they sounded the best to me and i read forums on here about how good they sounded.
