My radio was hacked up too. Having the dash restored was a priority since it a key line-of site area. Too me, the radio is one on of the signature design elements of the 65/66 Mustang.

I had the dash restored to "as new" condition. This required cutting out the butchered section a replacing it with a repro metal piece with the proper radio cut outs. This was welded into place while the entire dash was taken down to bare metal and repainted.

The cost was over $1,000 (plus the cost of the Custom AutoSOund USA 66 radio). I know is seems crazy but I do not regret it for a moment. Each time I drive my car I take great pleasue in the dash design which is unique to the classic Musatng.

Nice Job. That is what I am going for, but that is too much money right now.

Thanks for all the advice. I have a friend who can weld maybe I can get him to help me out (Hey Jack want some cold ones. I'll be right over.). Seems simple enough.

Thanks Jim. Most newcomers don't realize the massive amount of information I have gathered that will answer just about every question, but if it doesn't, we are here to help.

My '66 has the orignal AM 8-track radio in the dash. Is the hole that is in the dash for those the same size as all others or is it bigger? I was considering removing the old radio and storing it and putting in one of the Custom Auto Sound 66s but if the cut out size is different then I will have to go a different route.

If you don't want to tackle welding in the new metal repair panel, then follow Jeff's advice and get the plastic one and bondo it in, sand, prime and paint.
FWIW Glen, I used the metal repair panel. To the original poster, the repair takes less skill than you think. I did it when I was 19 and had no fabrication or body repair skills to my name. I'd have welded it if I had one but the JB weld and rivets worked great and was still holding up just fine when I sold the car 18 years later. Once you get the plate in there, your biggest hurdle is to blend in the seams. Grind the edges as good as you can with a flap wheel, slap in the bondo and sand it by hand until it looks good. Paint it and you're done. I can guarantee you that it will look better than what you have now. Even if you totally screw it up (you won't), you can take it to a repair shop and you'll only be out the $15 you paid for the metal panel.

Go for it!!!!

Luckily my dash isn't butchered, I don't think, however I had a previous owner hack up my metal trap door it looks horrible so I have to stuff the crooked jagged holes with some new 6x9 speakers. Good luck with the repair!
