gears clicking when downshifting
hey guys, here is my situation, like the title says, my gears make a loud clicking noise when the car is downshifting. i guess the best way to describe it is you know when you put an auto c4 into reverse from park, you feel that little jump and feel the car shift into reverse. its the same feeling when im slowing down to come to a light and itsgoin down in gear. when its picking up from a stop and its upshifting, it doesnt make any noise and i dont notice a performance difference, it still picks up good like before. i guess its just more annoying then anything but i still want to figure out what it is, it sounds like its coming from the differential. what could it be? maybe my gears are starting to slip? its a 1967 stock 289, with a beefed up auto c4. stock rearend too
It could be the rear end getting worn and the gears are getting loose. Or, it could be something as simple as the U Joints clicking when downshifting. Crawl under there and shake the drive shaft and see if you can get the U joints to move at all.
If your U-Joints are tight, grab thedriveshaft and twist it back and forth to see how much slop is in that rear. If more than just a little, you will be able to tell if it's the gears that are worn. If only a tad of slop, then suspicion something in the tranny. If it is the gears that are worn, then yeah, they just need to be replaced. Consider going with 3.55:1 ratio gears if you have to tear into that rear. And, I highly suggest you have a pro do it if you are a novice.
On edit: I assume you have a V8
