Arnolds Auto Body in Northridge. He did a friend of mines truck about ten years ago and it still looks good. He specializes in Insurance work, not just customs. You have to be certified to do work for insurance companies so any shop that does it's majority of business with insurance claims is a safe bet to be good. If people start complaining about there insured repair, they will stop sending business their way.

]The place that is doing my car initially told me no. They specialize in collision repair for the local Toyota dealership but a lack of rainfall and a lack of collisions got them to reconsider. The guy's biggest concern is that he would quote for a paint job and then I'd nitpick it and scrutinize it like a showcar to an effort beyond what they bid. After assuring him that it is not a show car and that I was just looking for a good quality, nice looking paint job, they took it. Oh yeah, the fact that it was blasted next door and had no rust also had something to do with it.

Anyway, it looks like I have lucked out. Every panel was disassembled so that every nook and cranny could be properly painted (there are sure a bunch of pieces when you see them all lined up). For what I'm getting I think I did pretty well on price. That said, it is still a fair amount of money.
Good luck!

That is the problem in L.A., everybody wants to do insurance work and doesn't like to deal with restos unless it is for the really big money. If you want to spend the big $$$$, Timeclockmind mentioned that Mustangs Etc. in Van Nuys will do it for $8K minimum, but to plan on spending $12K and three months. [

I've been trying to find someone that would work with me- I mean- I'm completely willing to take everything off (doors, fenders, hood, trunk, extensions front and rear, valances rear and front, shield between the bumper and grill, all mouldings, trim, take out windows) and reinstall it after the paint has been done. I'm quite interested in the paint and body process as my car seems like a good candidate (no rust or major repairs necessary- that I know of) and I know a lot of body guys are just like mechanics- they want to do it all themselves and can't stand teaching. Soooo, I guess that I'm also in search of a body man in about 3 months in the south land- but I don't want my car getting stolen from a shop in south LA!
After I pick up my car (hopefully this week, crossing fingers), I'll let you know if I can recommend the place that is doing mine. From what I've seen thus far, my expectations are far exceeded. The one problem is that they don't really like working on classics, preferring to stick to their collision work for Toyota. It won't hurt to ask anyway.
BTW, I did it pretty much as you describe. I stripped everything out and off, had it blasted next door and then had this shop do the epoxy prime, ding repair, block sanding, prime and paint.

I'm in the 562 area, Long Beach. Check out McMillens Garage in Bellflower I believe. Its where my car is at, grade A quality (not a joke), but it can get expensive if you need a lot of metal work and welding. But they can do a beautiful job for 5K to 7,500 bucks if the body is really straight with minimal rust.
Great shop though, they are really busy though so it takes longer for my project
One custum truck they did one on of the 12 awards for best cars at the show at Hot August Nights. There was something like 3000 entries, so I'm impresssed my body shop won 1 of the 12 awards
