That would be your exhaust manifold and by the way welcome to the forums. Those are where your exhaust gases exit the block and travel out your exhaust system.

most likely you are disgusted at it being rusty, good. Welcome to owning a classic Mustang.

Replace it with some good headers when you get some money. They will increase hp, sound, and offer less resistance to backflow on the exhaust. Make your engine purr nicely and offer a quality and power increase? sounds like a solid decision to me.

Again, Welcome

I wouldn't be so quick to crap-can the factory manifolds. Just clean them up with a wire-wheel and a small wire "tooth" brush as best as possible and hit them with that manifold restoration finish/paint or whatever it is.
If the rest of the engine bay is factory, then go ahead and keep it factory as long as possible. Overall, no setup is as reliable as a factory setup. If this is your daily driver and you NEED it to run, just clean it up, slap a Krylon rebuild on it and jam.

Just my .02 worth.

The intake manifold is seperate - it sits in between your two valve covers (the long bathtub shaped cover that is black in the picture above). The incoming air travels through this when coming into the engine.

The exhaust mainfold "exhausts" the air out of the engine. That is the rusty part.

Oh, this could help too....your intake manifold is under your carburetor, which is under your air filter, which looks orange in the picture above.

Hope that helps!

well it depends on what you want - are you going for a lot of performance, or just a driver around town?
