Cable clutch conversion
All,
I've been reading a lot of stuffs about cable clutch conversion but still don't quite get it
- My car is a 68 coupe / 302.
- Was originally 4 speed, converted to a 5 speed (probably T5 ??)
- I understood that either the bellhousing could have been replaced or kept original. I don't know what was done
- I have the original linkage.
I have some work to do on the clutch linkage, it is worn, bushings were gone a while ago and the pedal won't return all the way up. Plus for some reason the pedal linkage going through the firewall scratches against the firewall instead of being in the center of the hole. But that's another story.
So I was considering the opportunity to upgrade to a cable clutch.
However, to my level of understanding a cable clutch is going to pull the clutch fork forward (towards the engine) while my current setup pushes the clutch fork backward (toward the rear of the car)
Does this mean I can't us the kits available out there to convert my car? Or is there something I'm missing ?
Thanks
JC

If you have a 5 speed and the original clutch linkage that "pushes" the clutch fork, then your 5 speed is likely hooked up to the original 4spd bellhousing. A cable clutch system would work, but you would have to alter your bellhousing (i.e. take it off and weld in a fulrum adapter). If you really want a cable clutch, then it may be easier to just acquire a 5 spd bellhousing and get rid of that 4spd bellhousing. Your cable clutch system will bolt right up to that without any modification.
I don't know about the cable conversion, but replacing the bushings should be pretty cheap and easy, and it will probably solve the other problems you mentioned.
If I'm wrong (probably) I'm sure someone will correct me.

Thanks Rorin67, this helps.
As much as I don't like this mechanical linkage myself, sounds like quite a bit of work... I might just try to rebuild my linkage as advised by TexasAxMan..
In that case I have to solve this firewall / pedal linkage issue which is part of the problem. I'll post some pictures later today for your advices
Thanks

Yeah, this is what I was looking into. But seems to be for T5 bellhousings only... Since I know now I have the older bellhousing with the 'push' type fork, this won't fit without fab or bellhousing change.

This is a good kit, but you will need to change the throwout arm as Rorin67 stated above.
