Default 289 heads

looking to buy 65 to restore. Owner says it has factory installed performance heads. The code on the fender apronis a C. Can it still have the K code heads. What is the difference. And where on the heads can I get"code or casting # " for them and what should it be if there is a difference in the heads.

Thanks, new to mustangs

Head casting numbers are not visible with the head installed. The 289 HP heads had screwed in rocker armstuds and will have a hex heat at the base. The heads will also have slots for the push rods. And last, but not least, inside the head, towards the left hand side, over the '289' cast into the head, are TWO dots.Ask the 'owner' to remove a valve cover so you can see all this. Factory installed 'performance' heads on a 'C' code Mustang are about as possible as the Earth falling into the sun as soon as you finish reading this. LOOK OUT.

thanks, I have talked to the owner since the original posting. The original 289 froze up under warranty and ford replaced it with a 302 Boss, and he has the paperwork to back it up. the motor only has 1500 miles it and the car has not turned 14000 yet (no I didn't forget another 0). The car has not been moved from the garage in over 22 yrs.

any other suggestions, thanks

I find that even harder to believe than having the HiPo heads. Look at the freeze plugs on the side of the block. If it is a Boss 302 they will be threaded, not pressed in.

A Boss 302 will have a casting number of C9ZE-6015, or in some rare cases, C8FE-6015, and D0ZE-6015-B. Any warranty for a 289 would have expired three years prior to the Boss 302 engine being cast.

It's possible, but I have no info on any Boss 302 casting C8FE-6015-B (it's the -B I have no info on). Just for the record, what is the date code? It is located near the casting number.
