I like your show and tell set-up, but the Ford Car Parts manual shows different part numbers for bearings and cups for six cylinder and V-8 applications for 1965 and 66 (64 1/2 implied) and different (incomplete though) dimesions. Out of the ten Mustangs I've owned, I've never owned a six cylinder and when I helped out on friends front end upgrades, we threw away the six cylinder stuff (it was beyond use anyway) and put in V-8 spindles and the rest. That's about it.
Jim
I think we had a miscommunication I was talking steering linkage and you were talking spindles. You are absolutely correct the 6 cyl and V8 spindles are different hence the different bearing in your parts book and even the differences in my picture. I was not disputing that because he already has the V8 spindles sense he said they are 5 lug instead of 4 lug. What I was trying to say and some how missed the mark is that you can use V8 spindles with 6 cyl steering linkage and 6 cyl tie rod ends and knowing that he has V8 spindles will not insure that the tie-rod ends are V8 sense both types of tie-rod ends will fit in bothe types of spindles. That is why I was saying that we can not assume it is V8 stuff until he verifies the thread diameter on the tie rod ends. Some people take shor cust and just chang eout the spindles and not all the steering linkage. Then I went on to show the picture so that people can see that even though you can use V8 spindles with 6 cyl linkage the geometry is off and can create other issues. Which brings us back to his original question. If the tie rod end threads going in to the adjuster sleeve are Ā½ā€ than the car still has 6 cyl steering linkage and V8 spindles and he will need to get 6 cyl tie rod ends, but if the tie rod end and adjuster sleeve had bigger threads (5/8" I think I cant quite remember) than the steering has been completely upgraded to V8 as it should have been meaning he needs to get the V8 tie rod ends. Sorry for the misunderstanding. When you mentioned bearings I was thinking the wheel bearings had no impact on the tie-rod ends and didn't even think about the 6 cyl bearings being smaller because he said they had already been upgraded to the 5 lug V8 spindles.

You ought to see the crap I went thru when prepingVW's for the Baja. Remember, 'VW's are all the same'.

Just look at where my tie rod attaches and notice the curved spindle arm. That's a V8. If you have that, then you have a V8 spindle, and most likely everything else.

I am really trying to not argue or be a know-it-all. We already know he definitely has a V8 spindles because he said they are 5 lug. And yes with a V8 spindle he should have V8 linkage and as you said probably does, but I have seen more than one car where the 6 cyl linkage was used with a V8 convershion to cut costs save time and sense a V6 tie-rod end will fit in a V8 spindle. Soooooo to be absolutely sure which tie rod end he needs he needs to check the tie-rod threads and sleeve to see if it is V8 or 6 cyl

Yeah, ifa 6 bangertie rod end will slide into a V8 spindle, then yeah more needs to be checked. Because of the question about whether or not to use 6 or 8 cyl tie rod ends, I was assuming the 6 banger tie rod end would be smaller than the V8 model or at least different size so would not fit in the V8 spindle. Are you sure they are the same Day?

Yes it does Jim. Left is for a 6, middle for a V8 and right for a 78 Granada.

I am positive!! I ran 6 cyl linkage with V8 spindels on my 65 before upgrading to R&P

EUREKA!!!!!!!! I finally was able to correctly express my self and my point YES the I6 tie rod end shank has the same diameter and taper as the V8 tie rod end, and YES an I6 tie rod will work in a V8 spindle. And that is why I was saying he needed to look at and measure the tie rod threads to know for sure.

(interesting side note even though the diameter and taper of the shank is the same between V8 and I6 tie rod ends the threads on the tip of the shank and corresponding nuts that holds the tie rod ends to the spindles are smaller on the I6 tie rod ends, but that has no bearing on being able to put them in a V8 spindle because the steering arm holes are the same)

I got to ask - why?
What I was going to do was to ask you and Glen to get together for a posting of the picture of the three spindles to be added to the FAQ's. Hell, do it anyway.
