Depends on what year Mustang you have. If you have a 67 to 73 car, go to http://www.martiauto.com/and fill out the form. It wil cost you at least $30.00 but you get a written report. It is based on your VIN, Vehicle Identification Number, not your license plate number. If you have a 64 to 66, no data exists for those years. If you wich to decode your door data plate, go to the FAQ section of this forum.

You can see the VIN stamped into the left fender apron. The data tag is on the left door. Verify the two VINs match so that you know that your door has not been changed out.
Try your registration. That's what California uses to register your car. And make sure that all three match - the paper, the door and under the hood.
