Default Scratches in chrome

Have some chrome trim that needs some TLC-- lots of scratches in it. Have read that 0000 steel wool gets rust off, but anyone know if it works to remove scratches? What would u guys recommend to bring back chrome? I have Mothers polish and it works well on the chrome with no scratches.

The only way to get rid of noticeable scratches in chrome is to have it stripped and replated. Chrome is an extremely hard material that is almost impossible to polish enough remove scratches. In order tofix scratches, you must remove material surrounding the scratch deeper than the scratch.I am not aware of any filler/compound designedfor chrome. But then again, I could be wrong........................anybody?CrashBob

To remove a deep scratch or gouge in a steel part that is chrome plated, the plater will add copper to the problem area. The re-chroming process can then go on as normal. That's about the only way to do this. However, it is expensive. The trade off is to buy an aftermarker item but they are sometimes crap. Note, I said 'steel' part. Pot metal and plastic chromed parts use some of the same processes but there are not many shops that do them. Bottom line, polish and ignore, or replace and regret, re-chrome and pay.

Chrome is really really really really thin. You will have to get the trim re-chromed. If the parts were polished stainless steel, then you would be able to clean it up.

Blane, go ahead and get an aftermarket one. Just make sure you get a good one.
