You can do like we do on Jeeps ... have a leaky transfer case or transmission that slings oil everywhere, permanently preserving the underside from everything except rocks!
Yeah that's what my poor 66 looks like underneath and it drives me crazy. I think I am going to have mine on a rotissorie.

What was the original undercoating on a Mustang?

Red oxide...it is pretty tough stuff, mine still had 90% of it on there, underneath all the gummed up mud/dirt from my tranny leak.

What does a Dual Action sander do exactly?

Thanks. Is the Eastwood stuff better or not?

Soaring, doesn't the red oxide stuff just get old and crack too? It can trap moisture, if I'm not mistaken.

No, red oxide is like a paint. Well, actually more like a primer. It doesn't get old and crack.
Here, read about it.

The biggest advantage I see with a D/A sander is that the paper does not clog uptoo much if at all, while providing very effective sanding. The other big advantage is that there arereduced swirl marks left in the finish, but this does not matter much when doing the bottom of a car....

A D/A sander is a real time saver when compared to any other type of sander I have ever used, and the paper lasts longer..

The paint on the underside of early Mustangs was a mixture of red oxide and all the left-over paints from the paint shop, hence the variations in color. Ford was very frugal.

It will not crack unless applied too thickly.....which can be an issue when people are unfarmilliar with paint products!! There can be a mentality where if some is good, more must be better, it does not always work that way with paint/primer, etc.

Yep, in fact if you read the MCA rules you will see where there must be the overspray from the body paint on the first part of the undercarriage. The early Mustangs sold for a dollar a pound. So, absolutely nothing was wasted.
